Malta National Indoor Rowing Championships 2021

The Official Results of the 2021 Malta National Indoor Rowing Championships, sanctioned by Malta Rowing Association, held on Saturday 20th November 2021 at the Ta’ Kandia Sports Complex are as per attached file: 2021-MIRC-OFFICIAL-RESULTS.

Malta Rowing Association (Għaqda Regatta Nazzjonali u Qdif Ieħor) organised its 2021 Malta National Indoor Rowing Championships on Saturday 20th November 2021. These Championships brought together more than thirty participants who raced physically on the day, or virtually (an option for the senior Masters and athletes in quarantine). 

As a COVID-19 precautionary measure, the Championships were held with waves of four participants racing at any one time, with their times being grouped according to the gender (male / female), weight category and age (open, junior and/or masters categories).

As is customary with the Malta National Indoor Rowing Championships, the Championships included the para rowing categories which were run with the joint support of the Malta Paralympic Committee who assisted with the national classification process of athletes. Siġġiewi Rowing Club para athletes Isaac Borg won the 500m PR3-ID category whist Julian Bajada won the 2000m and 500m lightweight PR3-PD categories. New national records were established for the 2000m LW-M-PR3-PD (Julian Bajada, 8:29.5) and 500m HW-M-PR3-ID categories (Isaac Borg, 1:56.0).

This year’s overall lightweight female winner was Siġġiewi Rowing Club rower Claire Sammut who won all three 2000m, 1000m and 500m open age categories. Sairita Cassar won the heavyweight female 2000m and 500m open age categories whilst USA rower Finley Quinn, affiliated with the University of Malta Rowing Club won the 1000m open age category. 

Emerson Farrugia won the lightweight male 2000m and 500m open age categories whilst Mel Magro won the 1000m open age category. In the heavyweight male open age categories, Steve Said of Siġġiewi Rowing Club was the overall winner of the 2000m race, Jan Tanti of Siġġiewi Rowing Club won the 1000m race whist Marsamxett Regatta Club rower Juan Farrugia won the 500m race. 

A number of other athletes won the Masters and Junior categories, the youngest of whom were twelve-year olds Scarlett Yilmaz and Liam Farrugia of Siġġiewi Rowing Club who won the female and male Under 12 categories.
