2016 Malta National Indoor Rowing Championship – Results – Photos

The 2016 Malta National Indoor Rowing Championship sanctioned by Malta Rowing Association was held this weekend at the University of Malta Students’ House and a number of national records were broken both in terms of race times and participation. Full results are available here.

The title of male National Champion in the 2000m male open category (HW) went to Marsamxett Regatta Club’s rower Juan Farrugia who trains indoor rowing under Ken Lake who obtained a 2000m race time of 6:30.4min thus beating the National Championship record previously held by Martin Dugas from the University of Malta Rowing Club by a fraction of a second.

Glenn Zammit, a rower with Birzebbugia Regatta Club, won the title of male National Champion in the 2000m male open lightweight category with a time of 6:51.9min, a time which broke his own National Championship record established a year before by around 15 seconds. Glenn Zammit, an engineering undergraduate with the University of Malta has been training indoor rowing through the University of Malta’s Degree+ scheme.

The female National Championship titles went to the rowers registered with the newly established Siggiewi Rowing Club. Nicole Gatt has won and retained the title of female lightweight National Champion with a time which is almost half a minute better than the time she did last year. Jessica Borg Ghigo won the title of female National Champion (HW) and also established a new record of 7:42.6min, a record previously held by Romina Magro of Birzebbugia Regatta Club. These rowers from Siggiewi Rowing Club are coached by Mark Farrugia of Starmax Athletics.

Other races held on the day included the masters and junior categories in the full 2000m length as well Open, Juniors and Masters sprint 500m race and a 1000m race which was open to athletes competing Juniors and Masters categories. The 2016 National Championship was organised by the University of Malta Rowing Club and Malta Rowing Association with the support of the local Concept2 official agent Ken Lake.
